Ed Watkins is credited for playing a major role in changing the way America prepares people for their jobs and careers.  While teaching Sociology at Pembroke State University, Watkins established a campus wide service learning program, the Human Services Center, that provided every student in every academic discipline with an opportunity to compliment their classroom theory with a service learning work experience.  This unique program was adopted and funded by the University of North Carolina system and served as a prototype for schools around the country.

In 1975, Watkins received the first Career Service award by the American Legion for his work in helping design the first campus wide service learning programs.   And in 1979, U.S. Commissioner of Education Ernest Boyer referred to his work of integrating classroom theory with practical application as a ‘national model’.

In 1984, Watkins served on President Reagan’s White House Conference on Productivity where he presented the productivity prototype he helped create at the then new General Motors Plant in Wentzville, Mo.

“Most Americans make career decisions on the basis of a ridiculously small amount of information, a situation which causes job dissatisfaction and low productivity, an authority on career development says.  This problem has unfortunate economic implications,’ Watkins said. 

‘If as evidence suggest, people find their place in the system randomly and indiscriminately, why should we be surprised at the large number of people who are ‘misplaced’ or who are ‘misfits’? Why should we be surprised that so many people are not motivated to be productive?’ ” 5-25-82 St. Louis Post-Dispatch
